Music
The Irish music scene here in San Francisco is very active. There
are seisiúns nearly every night of the week, and with that
much going on there is certainly something for everyone.
Cooley~Keegan is proud to sponsor a junior
seisiún once a month at Ireland's 32 on Geary. It
has been running steadily now since April, 2001. All ages of musicians are welcome, and they serve dinner from a limited menu.
Early in 2002, we also started up a singing
seisiún. The first one had seen about a dozen people
in attendance, and it has been growing ever since. We are delighted
to have some very talented people attend this, and we are treated
to stories (in Irish and English), sean nos singing and just great
tunes. This event is happening once a month on random days. Check
our singing seisiún page
for more information.
August, 2002 also saw our first music workshop. This was a one day
event that was held at the UICC, and we had a grand time. There were
workshops for beginner to advanced musicians in instruments ranging
from tin whistle, fiddle, accordion, uilleann
pipes, harp and voice. The workshop was very well attended indeed.
This was intended as a stepping stone to promote other workshops and
classes. To that end, we had had several whistle classes in conjunction
with our children's ceílís.
San Francisco is also home for many fine Irish
Bands, and we have had the good fortune to have most of them
play for our dances and ceílís. The two bands that play
for us on a regular basis are Tipsy House
and the Bridge Gap Ceílí
Band. Both bands have been with us for a long time, and they
play brilliantly. We are also proud to announce the recent formation
of a new dance band! The Golden Gate Ceílí
Band plays for dancing at Ireland's 32 on a regular basis.
For those who are looking to find a music instructor, we had a list
of local instructors. While we can not recommend one over
the other, we can say that they are all fine musicians and teachers.
As there are so many events and information about things going on
here in the Bay Area we can not list them all. To this end, we have
a collection of links that do
a great job of keeping up on things happening in the area and beyond... |
